]]> So many people are looking for help to avoid foreclosure these days. It seems like the sad stories never end. Where can someone go for help? Obviously, there is the federal plan that everyone is talking about. But there are other resources available to help you avoid foreclosure.

In Michigan, beginning July 12, there is a new program available called “Help for the Hardest Hit”. If a Michigan homeowner is struggling to make their payments due to unemployment, this program will provide some assistance monthly, for up to 12 months or re-employment (whichever is shorter duration). It is estimated that about 17,000 Michigan families will benefit.

If you are a Michigan resident interested in getting help through this program, you need to apply through your mortgage servicer.

Eligible homeowners must meet the following federal income limits: one person can earn up to $44,800; two people, $51,200; three people, $57,600; four people, $64,000; five people; $69,100; six people, $74,250; seven people, $79,350; and eight people, $84,500.

You can get help paying your utility bill. Most people think of these programs in the winter, when it’s so cold, but there are programs available to help pay your utility bill in the summer when you get whacked with the costs to run an air conditioner.

Virginia residents can get help at the Department of Social Services. To qualify, there must be at least one person in the house under 6 or over 60 years old. Income requirements also must be met. One-person households with a maximum gross monthly income of $1,174 before taxes — of $2,389 for a household of four — are eligible to receive assistance.

The deadline to apply for utility bill assistance in Virginia is August 16.
