Assistance Needed in Connecticut
Tuesday, December 1st, 2009Hello!
My husband and I live in Connecticut. My husband has been suffering from End Stage Renal Disease for the past 4 1/2 yrs. He is 46yrs old and we have three teenage children. My husband is required to be on dialysis five-six hours a day, seven days a week. He is totally disabled and unable to work. He has been hospitalized over 200 times and is very much in need of a kidney transplant and actively working with Yale New Haven’s Transplant Team. I am my husbands caretaker, due to his illness he is unable to be left unattended. We support our family solely on SS Disability Benefits. His illness has caused a tremendous financial hardship on our family.
Well, that is the background.
The reason I am contacting you today is we purchased a brand new home almost five years ago. Just a couple of months before my husband became critically ill. Before that time he was making a very good income. Last year we started having trouble with our well water, sometimes we would have water and other times would not. We had a well specialist come out and they said we needed a new well pump. We replaced it $3600. The well is 500 ft.
We have no water again and haven’t for the past several months. We have had to have dialysis solution shipped to our home, because we can’t use our water. My husband’s life is dependent on dialysis and this water problem could prevent him from being able to perform these life sustaining treatments in our home.
We recently had a well specialist come out and we were told the water tank in the basement was too small, and that we needed to purchase a bigger tank. We did and we still have no water. We are now told we need a new well.
Do you know of any grants that would help pay to drill a new well? I would think with the serious nature of my husbands illness and the fact he is disabled, there would be some help available. I would greatly appreciate any help you may be able to offer.
Thank you so much!!

I am so sorry to hear about your husband’s illness. That must be very hard for your family, and I’ll keep you all in my thoughts.
Can you please let me know what city/county you are in? That will help me target the agencies most likely to be able to help you.

Hopefully I can do something to help! Right now, I haven’t found anything to help specifically with the well, but I’m still looking.
I’m going to raise what might seem like a strange question – is there any possibility that a neighboring home has tapped into your well system? I’ve personally seen that happen and it resulted in what appeared to be a dry well for the property, but the water was actually being diverted. Just a thought…
There are some organizations that provide grants that help with kidney disease related expenses:
American Kidney Fund has safety net grants for expenses – http://www.kidneyfund.org/patient-grants/safety-net-grants/
The National Kidney Foundation of Connecticut also has grants – http://www.kidney.org/site/patients/index.cfm?ch=102

Well….I’m not having much luck finding help specifically for drilling a well. Mainly it’s because well drilling is a regulated activity. The regulatory agency for private wells is the Department of Public Health. Maybe you can call them and explain the situation and see if they know of any resources: 860-509-8000
Best wishes to you and your family!

Thank you for trying to help. I will call the Dept of Public Health Monday morning and see if they know of any resources. No, a neighboring well can’t be the problem we live way out in the woods and no houses close by. Also, thanks for the links to the NKF they are helpful and have contacted them in the past. They offer small grants toward a bill, I think it is $250 per year. The estimate for the well is $10,000! Hopefully, I can find some help.
This site you have created is awesome!!! I just love it! I have contacted the Rainy Day Foundation that you have listed for help with my mortgage payments. Praying they will be able to help me with that. Many thanks for what you do to help people like me!
God Bless,
Sharon

Keeping you in my thoughts

Hello
I just happened to be looking for some type of grant for
the hardship Im facing and saw your story. God do I wish I had money to give you. All I can do is hope that someone sees your Blog and through the channels of communication find you help. I hope and pray for a miracle and easier life for you and your family. Miracles do happen. Perhaps if everyone sent what they could, it would add up considerably? I have a suggestion for what its worth… Craigslist. There are pros and cons about Craigslist. Dont ever give your phone number or address..but let those who want to help give you something concrete. I would put an ad on there for looking for a service or Bartering… and ask some Drilling Company if they would donate drilling well
for you. Ask someone else if they would help with a new tank? Are there no Philanthropists in CT?! If not there should be..there are enough wealthy people around. Dont any have a heart?
I wish you the best of luck. If I had a bank account I would give you some money and set you up with the well and then some. I cant because I dont have the resources.
Craigslist… be careful..you will have 90% of the people playing games with you and trying to take your last buck…its the 10% you need to look for. The decent, sane, compassionate and truly generous and caring people. Perhaps theres a way that you can word your Ad so that real phone contact numbers are given to you. Dont click on links in an email from Craigslist it can make you flag your own ad and have it removed. One of the things some of the sickos out there do to folks who are trying to survive and get jobs… nice eh? I dont want to discourage you. Perhaps a local church could hear your cause??!!! I would call every church in your area…forget Craigslist… I would put my bet on churches … If you had a friend who could ask all the churches to work together to helo you you might have some good luck and bllessing there. If not ..God help us all! We will need it.
