Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to get a grant that is paid directly to you. This has a lot to do with tax reasons, as well as the grant maker wanting to be certain that the money goes toward the intended purpose.

is there one and if so how do you go about and how do you go about getting a grant to buy a home?

The closest you’re going to get is to apply for the Temporary Assistance For Needy Families (TANF) program in your city. This is also called public assistance or welfare, and is based on your income.

Grants that are paid directly to individuals are usually for artists or craftspeople to progress with their work. You will not get a grant directly to you to pay off your car or other bills, they don’t exist because of tax rules and that the grant maker wants to be sure that the money went to what it was supposed to, so they pay it directly (to a utility company, home lender, etc.)

For getting a grant to buy a home, you can look at the county or city websites where you’re interested in purchasing. You can also look up the Housing Finance Authority – a lot of cities and counties have those. Or, if you would like me to help you narrow it down you can post a request (read more about that option: http://mommaknowsmoney.com/?page_id=836)
