Stupid Grant Search Advice

Saturday, July 11th, 2009

I gotta vent.  I spend a lot of time on Yahoo! Answers answering questions about searching for grants.  I’m obviously swimming upstream with this one.  For every question I answer, I see ten others with totally misleading answers.  It’s really discouraging.

I am so tired of these know-it-alls telling people to go to www.grants.gov.  They tell people it’s the only legitimate site for grants, and that’s where people should be looking for their personal needs.

STOP IT!!  Grants.gov is the official clearinghouse for federal grant programs, but it’s not the ONLY place to find grants.  Many of their grants are available to individuals but they are not for personal needs.  They are for projects serving a greater good, usually in health or science.  I wish these dopes would quit misleading people.  If you don’t really know the answer, don’t answer.  Other stupid answers that I see involve smart-ass or downright rude remarks telling people that there are no grants out there.  If you’ve read my blog at all, you should know that is totally wrong.  There are grants for individuals and I post them here when I find them.

If you can’t find what you need here, you might have a question: where should you be looking if you are in need?  Try your city website, local nonprofits, or arts council (if you’re an artist).  Try www.211.org too.  It’s a free service that matches people up to available programs. Don’t bother asking for help on Yahoo! Answers unless you feel like wasting time or getting some nasty remarks about your personal situation.
