Scholarships for Dancers

Working in conjunction with nominating schools and non-profit companies, the Princess Grace Awards recognize the talent of individual artists in theater, dance, and film.

Grant applications are currently being accepted for scholarships for dancers at nonprofit schools. Grants are based on tuition costs only (no room and board, materials, costumes, etc.) This program also includes fellowships for dancers at nonprofit companies. Typically these awards range from $5,000 to $25,000.

The application deadline is April 30, 2010.

Burning Man Art Grant

Every year Burning Man issues a small number of grants for the purpose of partially funding specific art projects. They look for work that stands on its own as physical, sculptural installation, independent of performances or activities, although these may accompany the installation.

Grants are awarded up to roughly a $20,000 maximum. The grant is intended to cover material costs, but not labor.

The application deadline is February 1, 2010.

Grants for Artists in South Dakota

South Dakota artists, arts organizations and other nonprofit groups can seek grant support from the South Dakota Arts Council to assist in funding arts projects throughout the state. Applicants have until March 1 to apply for projects and activities that will occur July 1, 2010 – June 30, 2011.

Artist Fellowships of $5,000 are awarded to South Dakota artists of exceptional talent in any discipline or medium to recognize past artistic achievement and encourage future artistic growth.
Artist Project Grants between $1,000 and $2,000 are awarded to talented South Dakota artists in any discipline or medium to fund specific arts-related projects that not only further the artist’s career but also benefit the public in some way.
Artist Collaboration Grants encourage South Dakota artists to collaborate among themselves or with an out-of-state artist in the creation of a joint project or activity that will significantly benefit the artists and the state. A maximum of $6,000 may be requested.
Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Grants promote the continuation of folk and traditional arts and culture by providing up to $4,000 in support of a master folk artist to teach qualified apprentices.
South Dakota nonprofit organizations may also seek funding support through four grant programs:
Project Grants assist nonprofit organizations in the Presentation of a single arts event or a series of similar and related arts activities that benefit the general public.
Importation of Musicians Grants enable small South Dakota orchestras that don’t receive funding in another grant category to improve the quality of their performance seasons by importing musicians from outside their local communities to supplement local orchestra personnel.
Arts Challenge Grants and Small Organization Season Support Grants provide general operating support to large and small arts organizations, respectively. These grants are multi-year awards, and applications from new organizations are not being accepted this year. In order to secure continued funding, organizations presently receiving Challenge or SOSS grants must submit a financial summary of their most recently completed fiscal year and a current operating budget.

Public Art Grants Available

Forecast Public Art, a nonprofit public arts organization based out of the Twin Cities, recently announced a partnership with the East Central Arts Council to offer Public Art Planning grants in the amount of $2,000 to the artists of Chicago, Isanti, Kanabec, Mille Lacs, and Pine counties.

The application deadline is February 6, 2010.

Individual Artist Grant

The New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) awards grants of up to $25,000 for the production of film, video, media or new technology project. The Individual Artists Program offers support for the creation of new work by New York State artists through artist-initiated projects in electronic media (video, sound art, installations, and new technologies) and film production, and the commissioning of new work by composers and theatre artists. Artists at various career stages are welcome to apply to this Program.

Because NYSCA cannot fund individuals directly, all applications to the Individual Artists program must be submitted through a fiscal sponsor like The Standby Program. The Standby Program will accept projects for registration until January 15, 2010

The Nebraska Arts Council offers several programs for artists:

Artists in Schools/Communities Artists Proposal
Artists are reviewed for inclusion in the NAC Artist Directory, used by schools & nonprofit organizations to select artists for residencies. Deadline: February 1.
Nebraska Touring Program/Exhibits Nebraska Artists Proposal
Nebraska artists and performing arts organizations are reviewed for inclusion in the NAC Artist Directory, used by nonprofit organizations to select performances & exhibits. Deadline: February 1.
Mentoring Program for Artists of Color and Traditional Artists
Pairs established master artists or administrators of any ethnic background with artists or administrators of color who wish to improve their skills. Pairs master traditional artists with those from the same tradition who desire to learn the skill or art form. Applications are sent on request. Deadline: 6 weeks before the start date of the project.
Individual Artist Fellowships
Competitive award program for Nebraska artists. Literature, performing arts and visual arts alternate in a 3 year cycle.
Deadline: November 15. Visit the NAC website for category year.
One Percent For Art Program
Competitive program that provides for implementation of Nebraska’s One Percent For Art projects. Nebraska artists, as well as artists outside the state, are eligible to submit proposals. Deadline: Depends on project. Visit the NAC website for information.
Governor’s Residence Exhibit Program
Provides an opportunity for Nebraska visual artists working in the two-dimensional format to exhibit a solo show at the Nebraska Governor’s Residence in Lincoln. Deadline: May 31.
Nebraska Showcase Gallery Exhibit Program
Provides Nebraska visual artists an exhibit opportunity for a solo or duo show at the Nebraska Arts Council offices.
Deadline: August 31.

Fellowships for Artists

There are lots of artist fellowship programs offered across the United States, generally by arts councils. The North Dakota Council on the Arts offers artist fellowships up to $2,500 each year. The 2010 fellowships are offered for Music and Literature (the disciplines change each year).

The Individual Fellowship Program was established to recognize practicing artists residing in North Dakota with a monetary fellowship award. This program is designed to support professional artists with outstanding talent and ability to improve their artistic skills and enhance their career opportunities.

An applicant will be considered “professional” if they are pursuing their original artwork on an ongoing basis within an artistic discipline, and if they are pursuing it as a means of livelihood, either on a partial or total basis.

The application deadline is February 15.

Forecast Public Arts annual grant program supports emerging, visual artists and interdisciplinary teams led by visual artists residing in the state of Minnesota.

Grants for Artists

A Strategic Opportunity Stipend (SOS) of up to $600 is available to Long Island artists and musicians living in Nassau and Suffolk counties. The grant is designed to help individual artists of all disciplines take advantage of unique opportunities that will significantly benefit their work or career development.

Artists of all disciplines, including visual artists, musicians, performers, and authors, may apply for awards ranging from $100 to $600 for opportunities occurring between March 1 – June 30, 2010. The deadline for the next grant cycle is January 27, 2010.
Examples of work the SOS Grants support include:

Travel and accommodations associated with an imminent, concrete opportunity such as a reading, audition, artist’s own exhibition, or workshop;
Materials to make or finish work that is integral to a specific, unique opportunity;
Exceptional chance for advanced study with a significant mentor (outside of a classroom setting and not related to any degree program);
Professional fees and services for a specific opportunity such as lighting, graphic design or carpentry;
Expenses related to care of dependents that would allow an artist to take advantage of a specific opportunity ;
Rental of equipment, instruments, or materials to complete work scheduled for a gallery exhibition, performance, publication, etc.;
Purchase of inexpensive or one-time-use items associated with, and necessary for, an opportunity;
Promotional expenses related directly to a specific opportunity.

Application is open to those who reside full time within Nassau or Suffolk counties, are 18 years of age or older, and are not currently enrolled in a degree program.

Cintas Foundation Fellowship in the Visual Arts

The Cintas Foundation and The Frost Art Museum at Florida International University (FIU) announced today the start of the annual competition for the 2010 Cintas Foundation Fellowship in the Visual Arts administered by the Foundation and the Cintas Fellowship Program at The Frost.

The Cintas Foundation awards fellowships annually to creative artists of Cuban lineage who reside outside of Cuba. Cintas fellows are awarded $10,000 and the opportunity to pursue an art project outlined in their applications. The program encourages creative development in architecture, literature, music composition and the visual arts.

The application deadline is January 30.
