Free Child Care for Unemployed

Child Focus in Cincinnati, Ohio is providing free babysitting services for eligible families. Their program will watch children from the ages of 6-weeks-old to 5-years-old while the parent looks for a job or goes to a job interview.

The program provides support for families in the Workforce One Center. Parents must complete some registration forms and provide forms of identification.

Women’s Opportunity Award Cash Grant

Soroptimist International of Saratoga County is accepting applications for The Women’s Opportunity Award. This award provides women who serve as the primary wage earners for their families with the financial resources to offset costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education or additional skills and training.

The award can be used for tuition, books, childcare, carfare or any other education-related expense. Soroptimist International of Saratoga County presents a $2,500 Women’s Opportunity Award each year. Club-level recipients then become eligible for region-level awards granted in each of Soroptimist’s 28 regions. The first place region recipients then become candidates for one of three $10,000 finalist awards.

The application deadline is December 15, 2009

Grant to Start a Home Child Care Center

The Pike County Community Action Committee is offering grant opportunities for those interested in starting a Type B home-based child care business in Pike, Ross, Scioto or Jackson counties.

Those who complete the program will be eligible for grant dollars to start and operate their business. Program requirements include receiving financial literacy, business and family child care training and completing the process for child care certification. Those qualifying for grant assistance also must be at or below 100 percent of the federal poverty income guidelines, which for a family of two is $14,570 and a family of four is $22,050.

Grants for Relatives Caring for Kids

The Non-Parent Caregiver Grant, also called the Child-Only Grant, offers financial assistance to grandparents and other nonparent relative caregivers raising children.

The grant pays an overage of $400 per month to those caring for one child, $525 for two children and $650 for three children. Only the child’s income is considered in determining eligibility (the caregivers’ income is not included in the application). Legal custody or guardianship is not required, and caregivers must be caring for the child full time.

Information on this program is provided by the New York State Kinship Navigator (a program of Catholic Family Center’s Aging & Adult Services). Here’s a HINT: If you don’t live in New York, it doesn’t matter. Do an internet search for “Non Parent Care Giver Grant” with the name of your state. This program is available nationwide.
