The Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation announced today that they are accepting applications for scholarships from the Anne Sanford Legacy Fund.

The fund provides scholarships from $100 to $1500 to allow women to attend political or professional leadership training programs. The fund was established by The Women’s Times to honor the memory of Anne Sanford, a pioneering businesswoman and community activist.

Applicants must be women of 18 years or older and currently living or working in the Berkshire Taconic region (Berkshire County, MA, Northwest Litchfield County, CT, Columbia and Northeast Dutchess Counties, NY) or in the Pioneer Valley, Massachusetts. All women are welcome to apply; women of color and those from underrepresented or disadvantaged groups are especially encouraged to apply.

You can get the application online at www.berkshiretaconic.org/grantseekers or you can get one by calling the office at 413-528-8039. Completed applications must be received at Berkshire Taconic by 5p.m. on May 15.

Neighborhood Grants in Connecticut

Neighborhood groups in Ansonia, Derby, Seymour, Shelton and Oxford, CT may be eligible for small grants up to $3,000 through the Valley Neighborhood Grant Program. Funding is available for neighborhood fairs, beautification efforts, leadership development activities, parent and senior activities and more. Blockwatches, business associations, faith-based organizations, parents and youth groups are encouraged to apply. Non-profits that are all-volunteer or have a staff of 4 or less are also eligible to apply.

The application deadline is February 1, 2010.

Connecticut Small Business Innovation Grants

A new program called the Connecticut Small Business Innovation and Diversification Program is available for small manufacturers in Connecticut. This program allows manufacturers to apply for grants to help develop and commercialize new products.

Eligible companies must either be based in or have significant operations in the state, and have fewer than 500 employees. They also must be willing to match the grants.

The funds will be awarded in grants of up to $25,000 and will continue until June 2011, or until all the money is spent. According to the information I found, this program will be administered by Connecticut Innovations, though I couldn’t find any application information. However, I just found this particular grant program the day after it was announced, so the guidelines might not have been posted yet.

In any case, if you’re in a high-tech business in Connecticut, you should visit their website because they do have other funding available, including seed and early stage financing.

Assistance Needed in Connecticut

Hello!

My husband and I live in Connecticut. My husband has been suffering from End Stage Renal Disease for the past 4 1/2 yrs. He is 46yrs old and we have three teenage children. My husband is required to be on dialysis five-six hours a day, seven days a week. He is totally disabled and unable to work. He has been hospitalized over 200 times and is very much in need of a kidney transplant and actively working with Yale New Haven’s Transplant Team. I am my husbands caretaker, due to his illness he is unable to be left unattended. We support our family solely on SS Disability Benefits. His illness has caused a tremendous financial hardship on our family.

Well, that is the background.

The reason I am contacting you today is we purchased a brand new home almost five years ago. Just a couple of months before my husband became critically ill. Before that time he was making a very good income. Last year we started having trouble with our well water, sometimes we would have water and other times would not. We had a well specialist come out and they said we needed a new well pump. We replaced it $3600. The well is 500 ft.

We have no water again and haven’t for the past several months. We have had to have dialysis solution shipped to our home, because we can’t use our water. My husband’s life is dependent on dialysis and this water problem could prevent him from being able to perform these life sustaining treatments in our home.

We recently had a well specialist come out and we were told the water tank in the basement was too small, and that we needed to purchase a bigger tank. We did and we still have no water. We are now told we need a new well.

Do you know of any grants that would help pay to drill a new well? I would think with the serious nature of my husbands illness and the fact he is disabled, there would be some help available. I would greatly appreciate any help you may be able to offer.

Emergency Mortgage Payment Assistance

The Connecticut Housing Finance Authority offers assistance and services to homeowners facing foreclosure. They administrate an Emergency Mortgage Payment Assistance program. This program provides financial assistance for up to five years (wow!) for Connecticut homeowners who have received a foreclosure notice. There are other eligibility requirements so be sure to read their brochure carefully.
