Free Dental Care in South Dakota

The University of South Dakota’s Department of Dental Hygiene is offering free fluoride varnishes and sealants to anyone 18 years and younger by appointment. A grant from the South Dakota Department of Health is making the dental screenings available. Sealants are a very effective way to protect teeth from cavities.

Upcoming screenings are Wednesday, Feb. 10, and Thursday, Feb. 11, Wednesday, March 31, and Thursday, April 1, and Thursday, April 22, in Sioux Falls and Vermillion.

Hours vary and a limited number of appointments remain. Call (605) 367-8046 for an appointment in Sioux Falls or (605) 677-5378 for an appointment in Vermillion.

A parent or guardian must be with children during the appointment.

Orthodontic Assistance

The Wyoming Department of Health offers “The Severe Crippling Malocclusion Program”. This program covers eligible children in need of orthodontic treatment (ages 12 – 18). Eligibility is dependent upon financial need as well as medical necessity. This program is designed to meet the orthodontic needs of children with severe handicapping conditions which clearly impact function.

There are several types of congenital craniofacial anomalies which severely affect dental occlusion and function. The most common of these is cleft lip/cleft palate, which affects approximately one in 450 newborns each year. Nearly all of these children will require comprehensive orthodontic treatment as part of their overall rehabilitation.

I visited the Tennessee site (for donated dental services) and they are not receiving any applications as the wait is already very lengthy. Where can I go from here? My brother is an incomplete quadraplegic and has lost alot of his teeth. I’m sure he could get the rest pulled but has no money for dentures. Can you help?

The National Foundation of Dentistry for the Handicapped offers a Donated Dental Services (DDS) program for individuals with special needs. Most states have their own contact information for this program, and that information can be found at the NFDH website here.

The Louisiana Dental Association has contact information and details for several free and low cost dental clinics in Louisiana. Areas served include: Acadiana, Central LA, Greater Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Northeast, Northlake, and Southwest.

Cash Assistance for Victims of Violent Crime

The Victim Compensation Program (CalVCP) can help pay unreimbursed expenses that result when a violent crime occurs. Victims of crime who have been injured or have been threatened with injury may be eligible for help from CalVCP. CalVCP may assist with the cost of medical and dental treatment, mental health services, funeral and burial expenses, home security, residential crime scene cleanup and emergency relocation.

If a person is disabled as a result of the crime, CalVCP also assists with wage loss, dependent support loss, job retraining and home or vehicle modifications.

CalVCP can help pay moving expenses – such as first and last month’s rent, deposits and temporary lodging – if a victim needs to relocate for their own safety or emotional well-being.

Emergency Awards

Victims can request an emergency award in certain situations. Emergency awards are made based on substantial hardship and the immediate need for payment. Emergency awards are most often obtained to cover relocation or funeral/burial expenses. You must indicate this on your application in the emergency award section.

R.O.S.E. Fund Grants

The R.O.S.E. Fund was established as an umbrella organization chartered to raise funds for, and awareness of women who have had the extraordinary strength and courage to break the cycle of domestic violence.

They have two programs for victims of domestic violence.

The first program is for medical, dental and facial reconstructive surgery procedures. These ROSE Fund surgeries and medical services are available to women survivors of domestic violence who suffer from medical issues that are a direct result of domestic violence incidents.

The range of ROSE medical services provided include:

A full range of facial plastic and reconstructive surgeries including scar revisions (from cuts and burns) and rhinoplasty (i.e. nose job)
Medical services and surgeries associated with the head, neck, ears, nose and throat (ENT) to include nasal, larynx/voice box, breathing/respiratory and hearing issues.
Dental and orthodontic issues ranging from chipped and missing teeth, gum disorders and other more cosmetic dental issues
Oral/Maxillofacial procedures associated with injuries of the jaw and associated eating and chewing issues.

The second fund is for scholarships to fund a woman’s career training and professional development. Partnering with academic institutions in the northeast, The R.O.S.E. Fund assists with the cost of tuition by providing scholarships of $2000 per semester.
