Grants to Strengthen Homes Against Storms

Thousands of Louisiana homeowners affected by hurricanes Katrina and Rita can apply for grant funds of up to $7,500 to take additional measures to protect their homes from loss in future storms, including installing roof-tie downs and storm shutters.
Some more examples of eligible work include:

• Strengthening doors;
• Protecting windows, including by installing storm shutters;
• Bolting roofs to walls and walls to foundations;
• Elevating electrical panels or air conditioning units;
• Raising washers, dryers, hot water heaters or furnaces;
• Anchoring propane tanks or heating fuel tanks.
Mitigation Analysts can provide homeowners with more detailed information about eligible mitigation activities.

Homeowners will work with mitigation analysts from the OCD-DRU Hazard Mitigation program, and not the Road Home program, for this funding. Homeowners must notify the state of their interest in the IMM program and the HMGP elevation program by March 10, 2010.

Energy Outreach Colorado has Multifamily Home Weatherization Grants available. Receipients can be nonprofit, government, or for-profit entities. I believe individual multifamily property owners may also be eligible to apply. Sign up on their website to be notified of the opportunities.

Fix Up Paint Up Grant for Home Repair

The City of Lakewood, California provides Fix Up Paint Up Grants up to $3,000. The grants are for seniors, disabled, and low/moderate income families who own and occupy their home and need assistance to make minor exterior repairs. Eligible improvements include exterior trim paint, window and screen repairs, gate and fence repairs, garage door repairs, deadbolts and weatherization.

Grants for Historic Buildings and Homes

Old Town grants remain available. People must apply for them, and the city’s Historic Preservation Board decides whether to award grants.

The program allows the grant money to be used for improvements of historic buildings and houses, and the property owners must match the money City Hall puts up. The grants are given out all year.

Some of the improvements that are eligible for grants include foundation work, outside doors, porch repairs, siding and outside trim. Upgrades that are not eligible include inside remodeling, additions, repairs of features that are not original and signs.

The grants are capped at 50 percent of the estimate of the work. People who receive the grants must pay back all or some of the money if the property is sold within five years of receiving a grant, with the entire grant being repaid if the property is sold within a year and partial amounts of the grant being repaid if it is sold between two and five years.

Grant Money Available to Replace Old Wood Stoves

Grant money to replace old wood stoves with cleaner burning units is available to residents of Ravalli County. Montana.Eligible county residents can get up to $2,570 toward the purchase and installation cost of EPA-approved wood stoves.

When families apply for stove changeout funds, an energy audit is conducted and the old wood stove is recycled. Ravalli County was selected because some areas in the county continually exceed national ambient air quality standards. The county also was picked because it has many low-income residents who use wood stoves as their heat source.
