Housing Grants for the Mentally Ill

Prairie View is accepting applications from individuals who qualify to receive funds from the Tenant Based Rental Assistance grant. Prairie View was awarded $100,000 from the Kansas Housing Resources Corporation to help people with severe mental illness afford safe and decent housing.

The program awards are funded through the federal HOME Investment Partnership program administered by KHRC. The grant gives the opportunity of affordable housing for those at or below 50 percent median income. Prairie View’s grant is targeted at persons with severe and persistent mental illness.

Eligible tenants for this grant must reside in Harvey, Marion or McPherson counties.

The awarded funds will offer qualified applicants as much as two years of rental subsidy assistance. Households receiving assistance will generally pay no more than 30 percent of their income for rent.

Homelessness Prevention Grant

The Monroe County Housing Authority in Pennsylvania will be providing financial assistance to help households on the verge of homelessness remain in their homes pending financial improvement.

The homeless-prevention grant, funded through the federal economic stimulus package, can be used for temporary subsidy payments of rent, back utility bills or rent security deposits. Funds will be used to help those who have fallen on temporary hard times because of a job layoff or unexpected medical bill.

The program is likely to provide just partial funding. The housing authority will work with the family, while negotiating payment terms with landlords or utilities.

The program should begin in early January. Applications are available weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the housing authority office, 1055 West Main St., Stroudsburg, across from Stroudsburg High School.

Housing for Homeless Veterans

The Abilene Housing Authority is able to provide 70 homeless veterans with vouchers that can be used for housing throughout West Texas, as long as the landlord accepts them from the housing department. This is a first come, first serve program so if you know someone in need, please tell them about this right away.

Down Payment Assistance in Arizona

The City of Tempe, Arizona has down payment assistance programs.

AMOUNT OF ASSISTANCE AND TARGETED AREAS

CAMP FUNDS

Up to thirty five thousand dollars ($35,000) is available to households purchasing a home in a city-designated Neighborhood Enhancement Area.

Neighborhood Enhancement Areas are defined in General Plan 2020 (currently all neighborhoods north of Alameda Drive in Tempe )

Households purchasing homes outside of a Neighborhood Enhancement Area are eligible for up to thirty thousand dollars ($30,000).

ADDI FUNDS

Up to an ADDITIONAL ten thousand dollars ($10,000) or six percent of the purchase amount is available to households earning less than 60% AMI and purchase a home in the city-designated Neighborhood Enhancement Area.

Neighborhood Enhancement Areas are defined in General Plan 2020 (currently all neighborhoods north of Alameda Drive in Tempe ) .

Income eligible households purchasing a home outside of the Enhancement Area are eligible for up to eighty five hundred dollars ($8,500), or six percent of purchase amount.

Good Neighbor Program for Homes

I cannot believe I hadn’t found out about this program sooner! HUD has a home ownership program for law enforcement officers, pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade teachers and firefighters/emergency medical technicians. HUD’s Good Neighbor Next Door Sales Program offers a substantial incentive in the form of a discount of 50% from the list price of the home. In return you must commit to live in the property for 36 months as your sole residence.

How the Program Works

Eligible Single Family homes located in revitalization areas are listed exclusively for sales through the Good Neighbor Next Door Sales program. Properties are available for purchase through the program for five days.

Grant Money to Assist Renters

The Lazarus House in St. Charles, Illinois received funding for a rental assistance program.

The Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-housing Program provides money to keep people from losing their homes because of missed rent or to get them back into housing quickly. Vouchers for getting utilities paid or deposits to turn on electricity or gas are also a part of the program. To qualify, individuals must meet the following conditions:
• Household must be at or below 50 percent of the area median income.
• Household must be either homeless or facing imminent risk of eviction as a result of inability to pay rent. Those who have received notices of eviction will receive priority. Households must also have no appropriate subsequent housing options and have lost financial resources to obtain immediate housing or maintain their existing housing, but can document prior ability to self support.
• Coordinate to determine appropriate assistance level.
• Temporary disability with no history of chronicity.
• Loss of benefits or income and no other resources available to fill the need.
• Imminent risk of utility disconnection or utility is already disconnected for non-payment in household not eligible for LIHEAP or other assistance programs.
• Proof of residence within Lazarus House service area: St. Charles, Virgil, Meredith, Lily Lake, Wasco, Wayne, Geneva, Batavia, LaFox, Kaneville, Troxel, Elburn and portions of North Aurora and South Elgin where students attend the Batavia or St. Charles school districts, respectively.

Homeownership Assistance for Police Officers

The Charlottesville (Virginia) Police Department Foundation is sponsoring a program that provides discounts on purchase prices, downpayment assistance, reduced Realtor fees, and other benefits that collectively help close the housing affordability gap by increasing officers’ purchasing power.

The Foundation and the merchants in the program will have the common goal of making home ownership in Charlottesville more realistic for the City’s cops – and at the same time send a strong message to these valued public servants that the community appreciates them and wants them to live in the City.

Housing Incentive for Arkansas Teachers

The Arkansas Teacher Housing Development Foundation (ATHDF) is offering housing incentives to assist in the recruitment and retention of quality teachers. The Housing Incentive Program provides housing assistance to eligible teachers. The program offers housing assistance in the form of forgivable loans and rental stipends. The program is supported by state funds that provide for the development of housing incentives for Arkansas teachers.

Types of Assistance
Through the Housing Incentive Program, qualifying teachers may apply for homeowner assistance or a rental stipend. Home ownership assistance is offered in the form of a forgivable loan in an amount up to ten percent (10%) of the purchase price for downpayment, closing costs, mortgage rate buy-down and other related costs. The loan is forgiven annually in equal parts in exchange for the teacher’s commitment to teach in a qualifying school district for five (5) consecutive years. The rental stipend program reimburses qualifying teachers for up to two thousand dollars ($2,000) of verifiable rental payments. The stipend is disbursed quarterly.

Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis.

Homes for Veterans

Homes For Our Troops raises donations of money, building supplies and labor to build homes. When a home is completed, it is given to a veteran who has been severely injured or disabled while serving in Iraq or Afghanistan. All services are provided at no cost to the veteran.

They have 30 homes in the build process for 2009! What an awesome organization. Apply for assistance or find out how you can donate at their website.
