Septic System Upgrade Grants

As someone who has a septic system, I’m always interested in upgrades and improvements. Having that thing lurking underground behind my house just makes me nervous. Anyway,the Maryland Department of the Environment is offering septic system upgrades to nitrogen removing Best Available Technology (BAT). They are taking names for a temporary waiting list. There are also 13 counties in Maryland which offer their own septic upgrade program.

Solar Energy Grant Program

Along with the geothermal pump grant program, Maryland is accepting applications for their solar energy grant program.

The Maryland Energy Administration (MEA) has reopened the Solar Energy Grant Program as result of funds made possible by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, Public Law 111-5 (ARRA or Recovery Act). Limited funding is still available to Maryland residents and small businesses who intend to install qualified solar photovoltaic, or solar hot water systems.

Program Structure:

Solar Photovoltaic:

$1.25/ watt for the first 2,000 watts of capacity
$0.75/ watt for watts 2,001 – 8,000
$0.25/ watt for watts 8,001 – 20,000

System must be under 20kW to be eligible; maximum grant amount is $10,000.

Solar Hot Water:

30% of the installed cost up to $2,000 maximum grant.

Geothermal Heat Pump Grant Program

I see a lot of questions on the web about where to find grants for alternative energy. Today, I found two in Maryland;’ this one, and one for solar.

The Maryland Energy Administration (MEA) has reopened the Geothermal Heat Pump Grant Program as result of funds made possible by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, Public Law 111-5 (ARRA or Recovery Act). Limited funding is still available to Maryland residents and small businesses who intend to install qualified geothermal heat pumps.

Program Structure:

Grants awarded under this Program may not exceed $500 per ton of cooling capacity, with maximum grant amounts of $3,000 for residential systems, and $10,000 for commercial systems.

Downpayment Assistance in Maryland

Community Development Administration (CDA) offers three standard downpayment and closing cost assistance products for any borrower who is eligible for a Maryland Mortgage Program loan. Borrowers can choose to receive a closing cost assistance grant from either the MMP+ 2% or MMP+ 3% programs. Also, borrowers may choose to receive a zero-percent deferred loan through the Downpayment and Settlement Expense Loan Program (DSELP). Income limits and purchase price limits vary depending on location.

Grants Available for Foreclosed Properties and Rehab

Wicomico County officials have announced the availability of several grants that can help homeowners repair foreclosed properties or rehabilitate the housing of low-and-moderate income families.

The Neighborhood Conservation Initiative will provide $407,928 for buyers of foreclosed properties. It can be used to make down payments, cover closing costs and make repairs. Those who are interested should call Cheryl Meadows of Salisbury Neighborhood Housing Services at 410-543-4626.
