Rural Small Business Grants Available

There are currently rural small business grants available from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. They are accepting applications from farmers, agricultural producers and owners of rural small businesses to purchase renewable energy systems and make improvements for energy efficiency.

Specifically, Nevada is currently allocated $338,850 in grant funds and more than $1.5 million in loan guarantees under the USDA’s Rural Energy for America Program. Eligible projects include installing renewable energy systems such as wind turbines, solar, geothermal, biomass, anaerobic digesters, hydroelectric, and ocean, or hydrogen systems. Funding may also be used to purchase energy-efficient equipment, adding insulation, and improve heating and cooling systems.

Applications are due June 23 to the Nevada State Office. Applicants who want to get an assessment from the staff on their proposed projects should submit their applications by May 26 to Mark Williams, Energy Coordinator. Clean Energy Business Grant

The Nevada Institute for Renewable Energy Commercialization, a nonprofit headquartered at Incline Village, is accepting proposals for development and commercialization of clean energy innovations. NIREC provides funding up to $100,000 for technology development and pre-commercialization activities and an additional $50,000 in business planning assistance.

The statement of intent is due January 18, 2010. The grant proposal is due February 15, 2010.

Assistance with Utilities

The Energy Assistance Program (EAP) assists low-income Nevadans with the cost of home energy. Funding is provided from the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) block grant through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and from Universal Energy Charge (UEC) monies distributed through the Nevada Fund for Energy Assistance and Conservation.

Eligible households will be awarded assistance once each program year. The benefit is based on the household’s gross income and annual energy use.

Small Business Grant

I actually found another small business grant program. These are really hard to come by, no matter what the infomercials tell you.

The Valley Center Opportunity Zone in Nevada received a million dollars in funding during the 2005-2006 legislative session and an additional half-million dollars from 2007-2008 Legislature. Businesses that were and are eligible for grant funding must reside or are willing to relocate within the bounds of Nellis Avenue on the East, Rancho Drive on the West, Craig Avenue on the North, and Charleston Avenue on the South.

Preference may be given to businesses locating in the designated redevelopment areas of the Cities of Las Vegas and North Las Vegas and for businesses rehabilitating and remodeling older properties. I could not find any information about the size of the grants, other than a 1:1 match is required.

U.S. VETS is dedicated to helping homeless and at-risk veterans, and a nationally recognized leader in the field of service delivery to veterans.

They are the largest provider of housing, counseling, employment and training assistance in the country.
