The Pennsylvania EMS Provider Foundation (Foundation) has announced that they are accepting grant applications.

The grant will be awarded to an individual EMT or EMTs who would like to further their education and become Paramedics.

The awardee(s) must have been employed as an emergency medical service provider for at least one year with a Pennsylvania licensed EMS agency or have been guaranteed an offer of a position with a Pennsylvania licensed EMS agency following completion of the education program for which the grant was provided.

The application deadline is February 15, 2010.

Homelessness Prevention Grant

The Monroe County Housing Authority in Pennsylvania will be providing financial assistance to help households on the verge of homelessness remain in their homes pending financial improvement.

The homeless-prevention grant, funded through the federal economic stimulus package, can be used for temporary subsidy payments of rent, back utility bills or rent security deposits. Funds will be used to help those who have fallen on temporary hard times because of a job layoff or unexpected medical bill.

The program is likely to provide just partial funding. The housing authority will work with the family, while negotiating payment terms with landlords or utilities.

The program should begin in early January. Applications are available weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the housing authority office, 1055 West Main St., Stroudsburg, across from Stroudsburg High School.

Grants for Farmers Markets

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture is accepting applications for the Direct Farm Sales Grant Program.

The Program provides funds to Pennsylvania-based businesses that manage or operate a farm stand or farmers’ markets, non-profit organizations, farmers and local governments for projects intended to promote new or existing farmers’ markets.

Projects must pertain to specialty crops. The maximum grant amount per farm stand or farmers’ market location shall be $7,500 and applicants are expected to provide 25% of the approved Grant amount in matching funds or in-kinds goods or services.

Small Business Grant in Pennsylvania

The Pennsylvania Small Business Advantage Grant Program is open for applications. Under this program, businesses can apply for a 50 percent matching grant of up to $7,500 for taking actions that save at least 20 percent annually in energy or pollution-related costs.

To be eligible, an applicant must be a for-profit corporation, LLC, partnership, sole proprietorship or other legal entity with 100 or fewer full-time employees. The entity must be a separate legal business at the time the application is submitted and located within the state.

Applicants may be manufacturers, retailers, service providers, mining operators or agricultural businesses. The grant-supported project must be located within a Pennsylvania facility belonging to the applicant. Examples of eligible projects include HVAC and boiler upgrades, high-efficiency lighting, solvent recovery systems, waste recycling systems and auxiliary power units deployed as anti-idling technology for trucks.

Pennsylvania Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program

The Pennsylvania Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program opens Nov. 2, a month earlier than originally projected.

The state Department of Public Welfare originally considered opening LIHEAP on Dec. 1 due to funding concerns, a recent increase in federal funding will allow it to open Nov. 2.

With local unemployment at its highest in more than 20 years, the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare is expecting increased demand for heating assistance this winter.

Cash grants, available beginning Nov. 2, are based on income, family size, type of heating fuel and region. Cash grants range from $100 to $1,000.

Crisis grants, available starting Jan. 2, are provided to resolve heating emergencies, such as furnace failures or unexpected fuel shortages. These grants range from $25 to $300.

In addition to proof of income and household size, applicants must provide a recent bill or a statement from their fuel dealer verifying their customer status and the type of fuel that they use.

A family of four earning less than $33,075 can qualify. That is down from $44,443 last year.

The season is scheduled to end March 15 but may be shortened or lengthened depending on available funds.
