Homelessness Prevention Grant

The Monroe County Housing Authority in Pennsylvania will be providing financial assistance to help households on the verge of homelessness remain in their homes pending financial improvement.

The homeless-prevention grant, funded through the federal economic stimulus package, can be used for temporary subsidy payments of rent, back utility bills or rent security deposits. Funds will be used to help those who have fallen on temporary hard times because of a job layoff or unexpected medical bill.

The program is likely to provide just partial funding. The housing authority will work with the family, while negotiating payment terms with landlords or utilities.

The program should begin in early January. Applications are available weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the housing authority office, 1055 West Main St., Stroudsburg, across from Stroudsburg High School.

Grants to Help After Foreclosure

If you are a homeowner in the City of Saint Paul or Dakota or Washington Counties that needs to move because of
foreclosure, you may qualify for a Re-Housing Grant to help you cover the cost of moving to alternative housing. The
location of the alternative housing does NOT have to be in these east metro areas. The maximum Re-Housing Grant
amount is $2,500.
Re-Housing Grants can be used to pay for:
· Moving expenses
· Security deposit
· Utilities (gas, electric, water)
· Up to half of the monthly rent for the first 3 months

These grants are first come, first serve so if you need assistance, don’t wait!

Emergency Mortgage Assistance

The Division of Family Assistance (DFA) provides Emergency Assistance (EA) in the form of payments to vendors for permanent housing for New Hampshire families that meet the eligibility requirements for Financial Assistance to Needy Families. EA payments can be applied to rent, mortgage and utility arrearages; rent and utility deposits; and fuel deliveries. EA payments allow families to obtain or retain safe and healthy housing.

Applicants for EA must be experiencing or threatened by one or more of the following:

homelessness;
termination of a utility; or
lack of heat, hot water or cooking fuel.

EA funds are meant to assist a family in resolving an emergency situation, after the family applies their own resources towards the situation. A family applying for EA must be without resources to meet an emergency situation, or the situation must require more resources than a family has available to resolve it.

Emergency Rent Assistance

The purpose of Champaign County Regional Planning Commision’s Emergency Rent Assistance Program is to help homeless households obtain housing and near-homeless retain housing. Services provided in this program include information and referral, assistance with landlord negotiations, housing counseling, and emergency rent assistance.

You may be eligible for rent assistance if:

You have steady income to pay future rent.
You have not received rent assistance from our office in the past 24 months.
Your rent and utilities combined do not exceed two-thirds (66%) of your income. We must always add $100 for utilities, unless they are included in your rent. For example, $400/month rent + 100/month utilities = $500/ 66% = $758 income needed
You are homeless or near-homeless (homeless means that you do not have a permanent residence, this includes households residing in shelters, staying with family or friends, or staying in a place not usually used for sleeping (car, street. etc.)

Grant Money to Assist Renters

The Lazarus House in St. Charles, Illinois received funding for a rental assistance program.

The Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-housing Program provides money to keep people from losing their homes because of missed rent or to get them back into housing quickly. Vouchers for getting utilities paid or deposits to turn on electricity or gas are also a part of the program. To qualify, individuals must meet the following conditions:
• Household must be at or below 50 percent of the area median income.
• Household must be either homeless or facing imminent risk of eviction as a result of inability to pay rent. Those who have received notices of eviction will receive priority. Households must also have no appropriate subsequent housing options and have lost financial resources to obtain immediate housing or maintain their existing housing, but can document prior ability to self support.
• Coordinate to determine appropriate assistance level.
• Temporary disability with no history of chronicity.
• Loss of benefits or income and no other resources available to fill the need.
• Imminent risk of utility disconnection or utility is already disconnected for non-payment in household not eligible for LIHEAP or other assistance programs.
• Proof of residence within Lazarus House service area: St. Charles, Virgil, Meredith, Lily Lake, Wasco, Wayne, Geneva, Batavia, LaFox, Kaneville, Troxel, Elburn and portions of North Aurora and South Elgin where students attend the Batavia or St. Charles school districts, respectively.

Emergency Financial Assistance

The Crisis Assistance Ministry in North Carolina has assistance programs for rent and utilities.

Rent: If you have been evicted or padlocked, or currently face eviction, they may be able to help you with all or a portion of your rent. To receive help, you must be late (after the 5th of the month) and have received notification from your landlord. Individuals seeking assistance with rent are typically given an appointment. Individuals with padlocking, writ of possession or other documents indicating immiment eviction are typically seen as a walk-in. Appointments are given on a first-come, first-served basis.

Utilities: If your utilities are about to be, or have already been disconnected, they may be able to assist you with all or a portion of your utility payments.

If you do not live in Mecklenburg County, please contact the Department of Social Services or your local United Way.
