Bank of America Hardship Grant Scam
Monday, July 13th, 2009Well, I received an interesting email. Actually I get a lot of scam emails so I thought I’d share the best of them with you. This one supposedly is from Bank of America, it’s got a bank address, and even looks like Bank of America sent it (from deposits@bankofamerica.com).
But if they’re sending me almost a half million dollars (and man, could I use that), why ask me for a piddly $450 for the escrow account? Good try scammers, better luck next time!
This email was sent to you by Bank of America. To ensure delivery to your inbox, please add wiretransfer@bankofamerica.com to your address book or safe sender list.

Bank of America Instructional Memorandum
No.: APS 2009-05
Issuance Date: July 03, 2009
Expiration Date: Retain Until Superseded
The purpose of this Instructional Memorandum (IM) is to define Bank of America policy and procedure regarding the payment of your outstanding compensatory grant for the current economic hardship. This Instructional Memorandum (IM) confirms the approval of an Irrevocable Letter of Funds Transfer as a way to ensure you get paid the sum of $409,990.00 USD (Plus Accumulated Interest) which serves as your hardship grant.
Please be aware that this compensatory grant ($409,990.00 USD) has been deposited into an escrow account at our regional escrow office in Alabama and it’s available for immediate disbursement. The payment of this compensatory grant is conditional on compliance with the guidelines and procedures governing remittances and disbursements of hardship grants.
The funds will be directly deposited into your bank account upon confirmation that you have activated the escrow account holding your funds by making a subsidized one-time payment of $450.00 USD through the popular western union money transfer network (www.westernunion.com) or money gram (www.moneygram.com). You will be expected to complete a direct deposit form.
Please note: It is pertinent to note that your compensatory grant was deposited in BONDS, so therefore it is non-negotiable, non-divisible and must be paid to you in full value. This makes deductions practically impossible to enforce due to our Internal Control Measures {ICM}.
To finalize the remittance and disbursement of your hardship grant, you are expected to activate the escrow account holding your funds by making a subsidized one-time payment of $450.00 USD directly to Escrow Officer at the regional escrow office in Alabama. Your compensation will then be paid within 48 hours of receipt of the stipulated fee.
Fines and Penalties: The Disbursement Officer reserves the right to impose fines and penalties for any violation or non-compliance with the guidelines and procedures governing remittances and disbursements of hardship grants.
Please Note: You will not be required to report the amount of this payment as taxable income on your federal income tax return.
For general information regarding this “notification”, to request a “direct deposit form” for government grant and to “activate your escrow account” please contact the Certified Disbursement Officer Dr. John Brusco at J.brusco@live.com
